Man admits to sex with girl, 14

MARION - A local man was sentenced to serve 25 years in prison Tuesday after pleading guilty to the rape of a 14-year-old girl.Chad E. Coomer, 32, pleaded guilty Tuesday morning to multiple felony counts stemming from a Nov. 19 incident that started at his North Main Street home and ended in a remote area of Wyandot County following a six-hour manhunt."Fortunately, this is an unusual case," said Marion County Prosecutor Jim Slagle. "This was an excellent result to be able to get him to plead guilty and take responsibility for his actions."His plea means that the 14-year-old victim will be spared from testifying against him at trial, which was scheduled to begin in late March.

Around 9 a.m. Nov. 19, dispatchers with the Marion Police Department received a 9-1-1 call from a woman reporting that Coomer, who was known to the family, had called her at work to tell her he had just raped her daughter."He starts crying. I'm like what is the matter? He said I am so sorry. I said what happened? He said I just raped (your daughter)," the woman told dispatchers. "As soon as I got off the phone call I left work and I called 9-1-1."Officers responded to Coomer's home, but were unable to locate him or the girl. A short time later they received word that the girl had managed to escape from the home and flee to a relative's house just blocks away. They also learned that Coomer had threatened to commit suicide and fled in his vehicle.

Information provided by Coomer's friends and family lead police to suspect he was in Wyandot County. Assistance provided by Verizon Wireless helped officers narrow the search area as they were able to provide Coomer's general whereabouts based on signals from his cell phone. With assistance from the Marion County Sheriff's Office, the Wyandot County Sheriff's Office, the Crawford County Sheriff's Office and the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Coomer was located around 2:30 p.m. that day. He was arrested without incident and transported to the Multi-County Correctional Center where he has remained since on $250,000 cash/corporate bond.

While Coomer, represented by attorney Fred Zeigler, initially entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity, he was ruled competent to stand trial Jan. 18 after undergoing a psychiatric evaluation.Slagle said he was alerted on Friday that Coomer had decided to plead guilty to two counts of rape, sexual battery, unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and attempted felonious assault. A third count of rape, a second charge of sexual battery and a single count of kidnapping were dismissed.Coomer will be transported to the Correctional Reception Center in Orient to begin serving his prison sentence. After his release, he will be subject to five years of community-controlled sanctions and will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Insanity? Anybody who rapes a child is insane! No sane people rape children!! Hopefully he will never see the light of day.
